The Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) is a well-known and one of the most common global measures of well-being. Similarly, HIES has become a flagship program of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) highly appreciated by stakeholders. The journey began almost fifty years ago, two years after Bangladesh's independence, the first round of the Khanna Expenditure Survey (HES) was conducted in 1973-74. Since then, BBS has conducted seventeen rounds of HES/HIES till 2022. In 2000, the thirteenth round, the survey was renamed HIES by adding more 'income' related questions to the HES questionnaire. The seventeenth round of HIES implemented in 2022 is a landmark for its many distinctive features, such as i) introduction of CAPI, ii) the use of a weight scale for food items, and iii) introduction of COICOP classification of households. The expenditure survey also benefited from: (i) three-week Residential training, (ii) refresher training for enumerators during two consecutive residential data collection, and (iii) rigorous monitoring and supervision providing real-time feedback to field enumerators throughout the year.
